importing wall grinders to the us: the grid, the duty stack, the first order
A US distributor's first wall-grinder import usually fails on the least glamorous line of the spec sheet. Every machine Cirelto builds in Wenzhou leaves the factory as 220V~/50Hz — correct for most of the world and not pluggable into a 120V American outlet. This guide covers what that mismatch means in practice, what a Chinese-origin grinder actually costs at the border, and how a first order runs at wholesale quantities.

the grid decides before the price does
All four Cirelto lines ship 220V~/50Hz; US buyers run them from a 240V branch circuit or a step-up transformer. At the border, HTS 8467.29.00.10 carries a Free base rate, but China origin stacks Section 301 at 7.5% and Section 232 at 25% — roughly 32.5% before fees (tariff data, Sep 2026). MOQ 10 pcs, samples 5-7 days.
importing wall grinders to the us: start with the grid
The 2026 range is deliberately small: three wall-grinder lines — the 3-wheel dust-free CI-G750, its 4-wheel sibling CI-G750B, and the large-disc CI-G180 — plus the mortar mixer and M14 paddle family on the mixing side. All of them are 220V~/50Hz machines. That single line decides more about a US launch than the motor wattage does, because the American market is one of the few the catalog does not natively fit. Canada is the other. Everything else — the EU, the UK, the Gulf, Southeast Asia, Australia — takes 220–240V at 50Hz and plugs in unchanged.
This is not a defect, and it is not something to discover at the port. It is an assortment decision, and it has three clean answers covered further down. What matters first is knowing which of your customers can actually run the machine, because that determines whether the US is a stocking market or a special-order market for your business.
hts 8467.29: what the duty stack actually looks like
Handheld tools with a self-contained electric motor classify under HTS heading 8467. Angle grinders, sanders and polishers land in 8467.29.00.10, and the headline number on that line is good news: the Column 1 General rate is Free. The base rate is not where the money goes.
| layer | provision | rate |
|---|---|---|
| base (Column 1 General) | 8467.29.00.10 | Free |
| Section 301, China origin | 9903.88.15 | +7.5% |
| Section 232 | 9903.82.09 | +25.0% |
| fees | MPF / HMF | 0.3464% MPF (min $31.67, max $614.35) |
Stacked, a Chinese-origin wall grinder enters at roughly 32.5% before fees (tariff data, Sep 2026). Two things follow from that table. First, the duty is a percentage of customs value, so freight and insurance choices move the bill — an all-in DDP price quoted by a third party usually means the goods are imported in someone else's name, which is worth understanding before it becomes a bookkeeping problem. Second, these are Chapter 99 measures, not the tariff schedule itself, which is exactly why they are the part that moves. Check the current stack with your customs broker before the container sails, and again before the next one.
Classification is worth a second look on its own. Wall grinders sit next to belt sanders and orbital sanders in the same subheading family, and a mis-declared line is a customs problem long after the invoice is paid. The honest position for a supplier is to give you the specification and let your broker classify — which is what the wall grinder import playbook does for the order mechanics generally.
three ways us buyers close the 120v gap
The good news about this particular mismatch is that the motors in this class are universal (brushed) motors, and frequency is not their problem. A 50Hz-rated universal motor runs on 60Hz without complaint — what it cannot do is run on 120V when it was wound for 220V. That narrows the fix to voltage alone, which is a solved problem three different ways.
| route | what it takes | fits |
|---|---|---|
| 240V branch circuit | a NEMA 6-15 or 6-20 receptacle | shops and crews that already have 240V |
| step-up transformer | sized at least 20% above the tool rating | sites with no 240V, or mixed crews |
| market-specific build | raised in the first enquiry | volume programs, planned ahead |
The transformer route deserves one number. Motors pull a heavy inrush current at start-up, so a transformer sized exactly at the tool rating will nuisance-trip; the working rule is at least 20% headroom above the machine's max draw. A 1400W large-disc grinder therefore wants a transformer comfortably above 1.7 kW, and the cheap travel-converter tier is not it. The 240V route is the better answer wherever it is available, because it removes a box from the van and a failure point from the day.
Worth saying plainly, since it shapes which products you lead with: this constraint applies to every mains-powered line we build, so it is a portfolio decision rather than a per-SKU one. Raise it in the first enquiry and it stops being a surprise.
ports, transit and a first order at moq 10 pcs
Orders gather at our Wenzhou consolidation warehouse and leave via Wenzhou, Ningbo or Shanghai — Wenzhou is roughly an hour away by truck, with the two larger ports taking the container bookings. Ocean freight to most US ports runs 15-30 days. Samples are the fast lane: any SKU, 5-7 days by DHL or FedEx, so a crew is running the machine before the production deposit is wired.
The quantity floor is 10 pcs per SKU, not per order, and the wheel models pack 4 units per carton. The two 750W models alone fill six cartons at the 4-per-carton rate, and a three-model trial still ships as LCL freight rather than a container commitment — and because the mixing-tools SKUs ride the same consolidation, a first US order can put a mortar mixer and a paddle family in the same shipment without a second supplier or a second customs entry. Payment is 30% deposit and 70% before shipment by T/T, with L/C available above $10,000.
where a us assortment usually starts
The practical US opening is not the full range. It is the line whose job is hardest to substitute: dust-managed wall sanding on regulated interior work, where a crew that cannot control the dust loses the bid rather than the argument. That points at the shrouded wheel machines first — the CI-G750 and CI-G750B ship shroud and hose as standard equipment, which is the setup the silica rules reward, as the dust-free wall sander guide sets out. The large-disc CI-G180 follows once you know whether your buyers are running 240V circuits or transformers, since it is the heaviest draw of the three.
Start narrow and deep: one or two models at floor quantity, let the sell-through data pick the winner, and put the OEM conversation behind that evidence rather than ahead of it. Private label opens at 50 pcs, so the branding decision does not have to be made on the first order at all.
faq
Do Cirelto wall grinders run on a 120V US outlet?
No. Every line in the 2026 range ships as 220V~/50Hz, the mains standard across continental Europe, the UK, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Australia. A 120V US outlet cannot drive the machine directly. US buyers run it from a 240V branch circuit, step up from 120V with a transformer, or ask us about market-specific options before the order is placed rather than after.
What duty applies to wall grinders imported from China?
Handheld electromechanical tools classify under HTS heading 8467; angle grinders, sanders and polishers sit in 8467.29.00.10, whose Column 1 General rate is Free. China-origin goods then stack Chapter 99 measures — Section 301 at 7.5% (9903.88.15) and Section 232 at 25% (9903.82.09), about 32.5% before MPF and HMF (tariff data, Sep 2026). These measures move; confirm the current stack with your customs broker before entry.
What is the smallest first order you ship to the US?
MOQ is 10 pcs per SKU, not per order, and the wheel models pack 4 units per carton — the two 750W models alone fill six cartons, and a three-model trial still moves as LCL freight. Samples of any SKU ship in 5-7 days via DHL or FedEx, so a US crew tests the machine before the deposit covers production.
How long does freight take, and on what terms?
Orders consolidate at our Wenzhou warehouse and ship via Wenzhou, Ningbo or Shanghai on 15-30 day ocean freight to most US ports. Payment is 30% deposit with order and 70% before shipment by T/T; L/C is available above $10,000. A procurement list comes back as a quote within 24 hours.
